3 Tips for Decorating an Open Concept Floor Plan
Open concept floor plans are incredibly popular these days. They are convenient when entertaining and make a home feel so spacious. On the other hand, spacious areas can feel cold and be hard to decorate. The good thing is that these problems can be fixed. I have narrowed down 3 tips that I am constantly using when decorating an open concept space and can’t wait to share them with you!
#1. Create More Zones
Open concept floor plans accommodate many different functions from eating, cooking, living, entertaining, working and studying. This means there are so many different furniture arrangements that could be used. The key is to create multiple conversation zones within each area. Try to add an additional conversation area in an empty corner or along a blank wall. Also, despite what many people think, adding more furniture zones can actually make a space feel and look bigger instead of smaller. Also, a bonus is that multiple zones will help your home easily accommodate more people by providing more seating and different activities in each zone.
#2. Use the Same Colors
Choose a color scheme that can flow easily throughout the entire open concept floor plan. Neutrals definitely work best but other colors can be used if they flow seamlessly from one zone to another. For example: don’t try and use a different color in each zone. Instead, keep it cohesive and use similar colors throughout the zones.
#3. Power in Groups
Once you create your zones, make them distinctive. Do this by grouping items together. Use a rug and place your furniture on it, add a table, add a lamp, add wall decor and whatever else you want to create this grouping of items that all connect together. Another big trick is to use different ceiling lights in each zone. A chandelier over the main living area will make that area distinct and help group everything together. Also, try pendants or wall sconces in small conversation zones to help group as well. When items aren’t grouped together, it will look like a store where items are spaciously floating around with no real connection to everything around them.
There you go! Three of my best tips that I am constantly using when decorating open concept spaces. Open concepts are practical and beautiful when decorated the right way and these tips will help you get there!
