One Room Challenge: Week 3

One Room Challenge: Week 3

Can you believe we have hit the halfway mark of the One Room Challenge?! This last week has been very hands on with DIY projects. Since I am trying to keep the overall budget of this makeover as low as possible, I need to use or repurpose as many existing pieces that I can. First up, the bed. My 10 year old son is eventually upgrading to a queen-size bed so his existing full-size bed needed a new home. The style of the bed was exactly what I want for my daughter’s room but the color was way off. Here is the exact bed I’m working with:

See? Way too dark for my design concept I shared last week. I decided to recover the entire bed myself in a light pink fabric. The fabric ended up costing right around $100 which was better on my budget than buying a brand new bed. The best part was that I was able to get the exact color I wanted for a super low price. Here is the fabric I ordered online:

This was actually a pretty easy project. I took the frame and legs off the bed and wrapped each individual panel and the entire headboard in the fabric and secured it with a staple gun. My biggest advice is to keep the fabric super tight when stapling so it doesn’t wrinkle and to fold the corners very neatly before stapling.

This is probably my favorite DIY project I have ever done because of how easy and cheap it was, yet a huge transformation in the end. Check it out:

The next DIY project I tackled this week was the doll house/play kitchen. This thing has to stay in the room because my daughter loves it and I don’t have a better place for it. The bad part is that the color scheme just wasn’t working with the new room design. Here is how the doll house started at the beginning of the week:

I love the whole concept of this play set with the 2 in 1 function and the overall shape is super cute so I actually wanted to keep it but make it a little bit more grown up and fit with style of the room. I started by getting a lot of scrapbook paper to cover the walls and floors of the doll house. I also bought some thin wood trim to use as baseboards. I decoupaged the scrapbook paper on for more durability when playing and used super glue to secure the baseboards. I also painted all the furniture, added some of my leftover fabric from the bed project for the doll house bed and then painted the outside white and the roof gray. I still need to decide if I want to add windows or something more decorative to the outside of the house but overall I am loving how it has turned out!

I am so happy I knocked these 2 BIG projects off my to-do list this week. The room sometimes feels like it is coming together super slow but when I look back each week it has made some big leaps. I have a lot on my list to accomplish this next week and it all depends on what comes in the mail and what I find shopping. Wish me luck and thank you for following along with this ONE ROOM CHALLENGE!
