One Room Challenge: Week 4

One Room Challenge: Week 4

This week was a lot of planning, prepping and shopping for my One Room Challenge makeover. This means there isn’t any progress photos of the room because it looks exactly the same as it did last week. Here are some things I wanted to accomplish this week:

  1. Start on the sliding closet door

  2. Start planning for the gallery walls

  3. Order the bench and pillows

I have never built a barn door before, so this was a completely new project for me. I searched online for some inspiration and ideas for the door. I knew I didn’t want anything that was too farmhouse, too modern or too common (something I had seen all over Pinterest). The moment I saw Kourtni’s door from House on Longwood Lane, I knew I wanted to create something similar:

I love the whole idea of this door and Kourtni was so amazing and made this project so much easier by providing step-by-step instructions on her website HERE. However, I wanted to switch it up a bit to fit the style of my daughter’s room. Even with all my changes, the instructions she provided were so helpful! I decided to skip the horizontal trim at the bottom and just do all vertical trim. Also, I needed the door to be softer and more feminine so I will paint the entire door in a soft pink. I will eventually add a long silver handle and use a modern, silver sliding door hardware system to hang it. I couldn’t finish this project this week because it takes a long time to prep, cut, glue, sand, paint, dry, re-coat and install, but next week I will share all the details when it is finally done!

Went through about 100 paint colors and narrowed it down to 10. I will let you know which one I picked next week!

Next thing on my to-do list was to start gathering inspiration for my gallery wall. I started a few weeks ago by having a local artist, Sweetly Sketched, paint a custom photo of my daughter with her brothers. This is the painting I found on her site that I immediately fell in love with and I can’t wait to display the one of my kids when it is finished:

The colors of the custom photo will be more pink and gray so I will be adding other artwork in the gallery wall in similar colors with pops of light blue and greens. Choosing all the artwork is a time-consuming part of the process for me because of all the choices available online but it is also a super fun part!

Next up, ordering a storage bench. I currently have a bench that I was planning on recovering in a fun fabric but it didn’t have storage and since this room is so small, it desperately needs more hidden storage for toys. I originally had my eye on this bench which was priced at $263 (which is a great price for how cute and functional it is):

I love the natural wood legs, fun pattern and the soft pink was exactly what I was looking for. But since I am trying to keep this room makeover on a low budget, I also had this $91 storage bench in mind:

I loved the color of it and I thought it would bring out more of the gray that is in the rug. I also think it would be more practical for my family since I could easily use it in other rooms in my house if she ever outgrows it or we redecorate down the road. I loved the pink in the other bench but if I want to add more pink or pattern to this area, I could add a fun pillow to the top. The downside of this gray bench? The legs are not my favorite. So I think I would have to either sand them down and stain or paint them or just get new legs. I ended up ordering this gray bench and, with an added discount code, it was $80 which saves me a ton of money for styling the rest of the room. Also, changing up the legs will not cost very much so this bench was the best choice!

I also ordered 2 of these pillows for the bed:

I wanted to add something more girly and fun because it is a kid’s room!

Please cross your fingers that they all are shipped in time for the reveal haha! Next week I plan on sharing my finished sliding door, a look at my gallery walls and see what I will do with the legs on that bench. Thanks for following along with my One Room Challenge and stay tuned for my Week 5 update next week. In the meantime, go check out all of the other guests participants HERE!
